DETROIT ROCK CITY!!!!!! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

My Take on whats goin on in Detroit

If you love Detroit's rave scene you're on the wrong page. I hate to break any misconceptions you may have but it's better to know what's goin on than to be completely ignorant about what's around you.

I've been going to parties for more than four years and I've partied all around the midwest and in Canada. I've partied in Chicago, Pittsburgh, New York City, Toronto, Windsor, Springfield, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Indy, and in other cities. This is what I've come up with. No scene is entirely perfect. Detroit's scene is entirely flawed.

There is a ton of bullshit and politics in Detroit's rave scene. More than any other city I've been to. Just four years ago parties were about 10 to 20 dollars. There were a lot of 5 dollar and free parties back then too. Back then people were throwing parties for the right reasons There used to be parties that only cost 5 bucks and a canned good! And the canned good was just so the motherfuckers could eat until their next party! Water used to be 1 dollar, 2 dollars max. Flyers used to be really small and the djs that were brought in were great. The vibe was tight, the venues were usually new or at least not too familiar, and it seemed like everyone involved was basically family.

My biggest complaint about Detroit's rave scene today is the trend to capitalize and commercialize the scene. A "cheap" party today costs 20 dollars. VERY FEW of these 20 dollar parties are worth the money and the promoters are walking away this THOUSANDS of dollars for throwing a shitty event! Some promoters have been known to bust their own parties if they're not going to walk away with enough money to make it worth their time. Some promoters purposely do not rent fans to make the venue extremely hot inside so more 3 dollar bottles of water will sell. Bottled water only costs 20 cents per bottle at Sam's Club. I don't know how many times I've paid 5 bucks for parking just to find out that nobody even watches the cars! That is complete bullshit. I don't think anybody would mind paying 5 dollars for GUARDED parking in Detroit, but half the time the cars aren't even watched. Is anyone else getting sick of the flyer wars? Sure they're neat to look at but those huge fliers are adding the rediculous price of the party! If you go to parties based on whose flyer is bigger, cuter, or because it unfolds in 5 directions then you need to re-evaluate what the important aspects of parties are. Personally I love to take flyers that unfold and spread them around on the ground so i can sit down without getting ghetto funk on me.

Another thing that has been bothering me lately is the bar crowd. First off, I HATE the bar crowd. I think each and every on of them ought to be bitch-slapped back to Motor and Industry. People like to bitch at me and say that it's not very PLURRY or nice to hate the bar crowd, people tell me it's close minded to say that all of them need to be kept out of our parties and people try to tell me that sweaty jocks and bar whores are people too but I just don't buy it. First, anyone that acts like an asshole doesn't deserve PLUR back. If you keep turning the other cheek you'll eventually be getting your ass kicked. Next time you see a fight look who started it. Next time you hear people arguing look at who's involved. Next time you see someone being dragged out of a party by secuirty look at who their dragging. Next time you're bumped just a little bit harder than normal, see who doesn't apologize for it. I bet 9 times out of 10 you'll notice that it's the bar crowd that is causing the problems. People tell me that it's bad to stereotype the bar crowd as being evil but face it, stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason. There is a lot of truth to stereotypes, whether you like it or not. Since I can't just play population controll and shoot everyone last one of them as they get in line, something else must be done to get rid of them.......

My only idea to get rid of the bar crowd is to collect email and home addresses of ravers and send out info about parties that way. This would also be a great way to take the scene out of the Metro-Times and back into the underground where it belongs. Map points could also be an answer too. Anyone that looks like they belong at Motor could get directions to either Motor or the parking lot at Van Dyke and Harper. Once arriving at Van Dyke and Harper the locals could take care of the bar crowd for us. Haha..

REMEMBER! Just say "NO!" to bar pants!
